2nd Annual Pend Orielle Potter Gathering
July 18-20, 2003
Information: Bree Reynolds, Coordinator, uncheesybree@msn.com
The 2nd Annual Pend Orielle Gathering in northern Idaho promises to be bigger and better this year. I hear more people are coming over the mountains to join us. I checked out the NW Potter registry and noticed quite a few Eastern WA potters and ID potters. Come help us show off one of the most spectacular lakes in the country!!! Doug and I are cooking up a special home brew batch for the event.
Update 7/7/2003: Okay, I've received a few rsvp's which is very exciting!!! Just a reminder that Doug and I will be giving everyone a very special bottle of home brew cooked up just for this trip. Directions can be found on the nwpotters website. We'll be at Buttonhook Thursday night for anyone who is coming early. There is a bbq pit at Buttonhook. I suggested a pot luck for Friday night. Some have called wondering what they should bring or whether it would be feasible due to being out on the lake for a few days prior and having to bring extra food. So, basically what I was going for was a group dinner but it could be bring your own food. That way if you're vegetarian you can bring tofu dogs or boca burgers etc. If you can bring something to share bring a bag of salad greens or chips or cookies or a bottle of wine!!!
Driving Directions to launch site.
From Seattle: I-90 east to Idaho. Take exit 11 (Coeur D Alene City Center/Hwy 95) in Idaho go North toward Sandpoint on 95. About 20 miles from interstate you'll find yourself in a small town called Athol (we always like to joke what you'd be called if you hailed from the town of Athol:). Go right at the light (Look for signs for Bayview/Farragut State Park). About 4 miles down this road you'll be asked to stop and pay an entrance fee. Its $3 per day for your car and trailer. Tell them how many days you'll be out and the park staff will give you stickers for your car. They can direct you to the launch too, but just in case, continue down the main road and take the next right past the Info Center onto South Road. Follow this for a couple of miles. You'll pass a few camp grounds and an RV pump out site. Just past Snowberry Campground there will be a small sign with the boat launch symbol. Turn right down this road. There's a nice prep area just past the large parking lot and no power lines or obstructions to worry about.
From Portland Area: Follow Columbia river on I-84 to Umatilla and go north into Washington to Pasco on I-82 Don't go to Richland, follow signs east to Pasco and get on Hwy 395. Follow this north to I-90 about 80 miles. Go east on I-90 to Idaho and see above. It should take you OR folks as long as the Seattle folks.
If you are making a longer trip out of this and will be exploring more of the lake you might consider launching up on the northeastern end of the lake and sailing down to join us. We'll be heading up the lake on Saturday and it will be easy for you to get back to your northern launch site. There's a nice one called Trestle Creek on Hwy 200 on the way to Hope ID about 15 miles east of Sandpoint. I don't think there's a fee, but parking is limited. There's guest mooring in Hope ID and a great floating resturant.
Back to the WEEKEND TRIP:
Once you've launched your boat sail SW down Idlewilde bay to Buttonhook Cove. There's a large dock there and that's where we'll stay the first night. Doug and I should be there all day Friday. We'll head out Thursday night. (Here is a link to a map of Farragut State Park. It shows the area between the boat ramp and Buttonhook Bay.

Friday night, we'll all eat together around 7 p.m. Potluck style. Onceyou let me know if you're coming I'll assign you an item.
Saturday we'll head up the lake to Whiskey Rock. There's a small dock there and good anchoring. Boats should be able to raft up. There's camping at Whiskey and Farragut. The bathrooms at Whiskey are very primitive (pit toilets) and there is water. Farragut has nice bathrooms with showers at the swimming cove which is a short walk from Buttonhook (they're free too!!!) Check out nwpotters.org for pictures and a map from last year's trip.
