The Seagull. . .actually her name is “Gaviota”, which is “Seagull” in Spanish. .
.is a West Wight Potter 19’ sloop. Not exactly a beautiful boat, she’s sort
of high sided, but that gives her a comfortable cruising cabin for at least
2 good friends and she rides behind an ordinary half ton pickup and launches
down an ordinary sort of boat launch ramp quite easily. More importantly, she’s
quite a passable little sailboat, goes to weather fairly well, stands up to
quite surprisingly heavy weather and is comfortable and dry to sail, even in
pretty heavy going. I bought her on the 6th of October in Grants
Pass, Oregon, brought her home to Seattle, spent the next couple of months of
weekends and evenings fiddling with details and adding things to make her more
comfortable or safer or both. . .or just to make her fit my notions of how small
boats should be rigged. On the 11th of January I said good bye to
the office and on the 13th farewell to home and family and began
the long haul South. . . .
