How to Contribute

The NWP site is dynamic and always in need of new and fresh material. If you are a small sailboat sailor (of any type) and want to contribute to the site, please do! To get started, sign up for an account. Right now this site is configured to require having an adminstrator validate every new user and please be patient as that could take a day or two.  Once you've been added to the NWP group, you can use the links under the "Add Content" heading in the navigation bar at the top to contribute. If you want to contribute anything to a static page (like this one) or have any suggestions for other additions to the NWP site, please contact the webmaster.

The rest of this page is dedicated to tips and guidelines for adding content to the site and assumes that you have already logged into your account.

 

Managing Your Account

Please do attach a headshot or other identifying picture to your account. This doesn't have to be recongnizable as you, but it is preferred. On the navigation menu at the top under the My Account heading, click on User Account and then use the Edit tab above the content to add your photo, and to add or modify other profile information. Please take this time to fill out biographical information, we want to get to know you!

 

Blogging about Your Adventures, Boat Modifications, Rants, Raves, Ideas for Future Adventures

To create a blog entry click on the Create a New Sailing Blog Entry link under the Add Content heading in the navigation bar. Fill out the Title and be sure to keep the first paragraph fairly short (about four sentences or so). This will be used as the "teaser" for the home page. Everything after the first paragraph will be behind a "Read More" link.  When you're done, use the Preview button to check your work. If you are not ready to publish the article just yet, use the Save Draft button. The resulting draft can be viewed later via the My Drafts link under the Add Content heading. Thank you for your submission -- The NWP readers appreciate it!

 

Adding Images to Your Posts

Image file types accepted are gif, png, jpg and jpeg, with a max filesize of 2 MB.  The max image resolution will be 800x600 pixels.

When you are ready to add an image to your posts, such as adding a map to your Sailing Event or a pic of your favorite marina, put the cursor where you want the image to show up in your post and click on the little icon with the "tree" just to the left of the Font Family selection box.  This will bring up a new window asking for an image URL along with other information about the image you want to insert.  You could enter the URL of an image if it happens to already be uploaded to an image server like PhotoBucket, but you also have the ability to upload this image directly to the NWP site by clicking the "Browse" icon located to the right of the URL field.  This will bring up a file browser showing the images you have uploaded for posting.  Obviously the first time you bring this up there won't be any files so you need to upload the image you want to include in your posts by clicking the "Upload" button at the top, select an image on your computer and click "Upload" on the selection window.  This will upload the image to your directory.  Finally, to actually add this image to your post select the image file on the file browser and click "Insert file," this will take you back to the previous "Insert Image" window and all that is left to do is click "Insert" on that window.  The image should magically appear where your cursor was located.

When you go to your "User Account" page, you will find a tab called "File Browser" which will take you to the same browser where you just uploaded your image.
 
This is NOT where you want to upload files for sharing with other NWP users.  See "Posting Files for Others to Download" section below.
 
 

Creating a Sailing Event

To create a sailing event entry use the Create a Sailing Event link under the Add Content heading in the navigation bar. Give the event a title and enter the proposed starting and ending dates of the event.  You are required to enter the region of the event to help members find events they may be interested in joining.  The "Trip Plan" field is wide open for whatever you want to propose, including maps and images, and the "Participants" field is a general text field where a list can be maintained of sailors interested in joining the event. When you're done, use the Preview button to check your work. If this is a work in progress and you are not ready to publish the event just yet, use the "Save as Draft" button and the resulting draft can be viewed later via the My Drafts link under the Add Content heading.

This event creation is still under development and will be tweaked as it gets used to make it as usable as possible for the NWP members.

 

Posting Files for Others to Download

The NWP site allows you to post files for public download. These should be strictly on-topic and G-rated items that you have legal permission to distribute. To create a download item, use the Upload a Public Download link under the Add Content heading in the navigation bar. Give the download a Title, such as "Dan's GPS tracks", add a relevant Description for the download and add a file (or files) to the download item as desired. When you are done, click Save to make it available to the public.

 

Posting Image Galleries for Others to View

The NWP site allows you to create a public Image Gallery. These images should be strictly on-topic and G-rated items that you have legal permission to distribute. To create an image gallery, use the Create an Image Gallery link under the Add Content heading in the navigation bar. Give the gallery a title, such as "San Juan Island Trip 2014", add a relevant description for the gallery and add the image files (or a single file) as desired. You can add multiple images at once, and you can come back to the image gallery in the future to add or delete images as you wish.  When you are done click Save to make it available to the public.
