WW Potter 19 Centerboard

Hello, I am new sailing and the website. My question is, "I just purchased a used WW Potter 19', 1999. Can the centerboard remain sitting on the 2 bolts I used to transfer the boat or do I need to lower the centerboard while parked on the trailer?

Thanks JB

WW Potter 19 Centerboard

First, congratulations on becoming a Potter owner.  Welcome!

So... CAN you leave the centerboard on the bolts?  Yes, you can.  But, if you have a bunk on the trailer specifically meant for holding the centerboard, why not use it?  Personally, my centerboard only lives on the bolts while I'm launching or retrieving (so the 300 pound weight of the centerboard is only hanging from the cabin roof for the shortest amount of time possible) and the rest of the time is sitting on the trailer bunk.

Back in 2012, when I bought my 2004 P19, the original owner had it set up that way.  He related to me that some of his prospective buyers said, "info on the Internet has it that you shouldn't leave it on the bunk... that's what the bolts are for" but neither the original owner nor I believe that for a minute.  I'd rather not have the road bumpiness transfer to the trunk while trailering... seems like wear on the bunk is much more acceptable (and easily replaced).

In the end, it's your boat, so you've got to do what you think is right.

Centerboard

Hi Phil, Thanks for the welcome and the information regarding the centerboard! I will be putting the boat in for the first time this Saturday at Brownsville Marina....pretty excited, my first sailboat.

Where is Brownsville?

When I saw you are from Brownsville I assumed it was Brownsville, Oregon, a nearby town, but there aren't any marinas around there that I know of.  Where is your Brownsville?

There's a Brownsville Marina in Bremerton, WA.

Brownsville Marina

Hello, Looks like you already got the answer. It's on the other side of the Tacoma narrows after Bremerton, not far from Illahee. My Dad used to be a Commercial Fisherman and he moored at the Marina when I was younger.
