West Wight Potter listserv listsYou need not be a Potter owner to subscribe. Prospective Potter owners and people just looking for information are more than welcome to subscribe and to participate on either or both lists. The Northwest Potters list is subscribed to by many Potter sailors in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. (BC sailors are welcome to but none are known to be currently subscribed.) This list focuses mostly on local sailing locations and conditions, and local sailing activities. It is where a number of group sails are organized during the primary sailing season. There are three ways to subscribe:
Once subscribed, to send messages to the list, address them to nwpotters@yahoogroups.com. This list can be received in one's email in-box as with other listserv lists or, after registration, it can be read online with one's browser at http://groups.yahoo.com, as with a BBS or online forum. Delivery options are available with registration at Yahoo Groups. To unsubscribe from the list:
The West Wight Potters list is a national list that currently is hosted by Yahoo Groups. This list has many hundreds of subscribers and is the best source of information about buying, equipping, modifying, and sailing your West Wight Potter. There are three ways to subscribe:
Once subscribed, to send messages to the list, address them to wwpotter@yahoogroups.com. This list can be received in one's email in-box as with other listserv lists or, after registration, it can be read online with one's browser at http://groups.yahoo.com, as with a BBS or online forum.
Subscribing to both lists If you choose to subscribe to both lists -- and the majority of us do -- you must take care not to unintentionally post messages to both groups, and to be aware of which group you may be replying to a message in. It is rarely necessary to post the same message to both groups and if overdone, can be considered excessively annoying by the other users. One way to keep the two groups straight is to set your email client to "filter" the messages into separate folders as soon as they are received on your system. Instructions for doing this with Outlook Express are available here. If you use another email client, you probably can analogize from these instructions to accomplish the same thing with your software but if you run into problems, feel free to write me and I'll usually be able to help. These instructions were written when the Northwest Potter list was hosted on its old server. One of these days I'll update the instructions and the screen shots, but in the meantime, most folks will be able to extrapolate to a successful configuration using these outdated instructions.
Regarding spam blockers The Northwest Potter list has experienced numerous bounce messages from subscribers who use mailboxes protected by aggressive spam blockers. In the past I've tried to track down the subscribers and let them know of the problem so they can address it. The problem has become sufficiently great that this no longer is feasible. With the change to Yahoo Groups, there is good news and bad news. The bad news is that Yahoo! will stop delivering your mail if it finds it to be undeliverable. The good news is that Yahoo! will auto-generate a message to you informing you that there's a problem and you need to fix it. If you don't get any Northwest Potter list messages for awhile, this is probably the problem. If you have the ability and knowledge to whitelist an email address or domain, you can whitelist nwpotters@yahoogroups.com. Otherwise, take it up with your mail administrator. I have nothing against spam blockers. I use two aggressive ones myself. But if you use one, you best know how to manage it or you'll miss mail you might want to see. Whether the Northwest Potter list messages fall into this category or not, only you can answer but if they do, you'll have to fix it. I no longer have the time to help. Home |
